Relocating to
Sonoma County
Moving to Sonoma County means choosing between Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Petaluma, Sebastopol, and more. Each has its own personality, community, and lifestyle. I grew up here and know exactly what makes each area special and who thrives where.
Six towns,
six ways of life
Sonoma County isn't one place, it's a collection of towns with real differences in pace, price, and personality. I grew up here, so this isn't research, it's firsthand knowledge.
The county hub. More affordable than the smaller wine country towns, with a genuine mix of families and professionals, and still close enough to everything else the county offers.
The postcard version of wine country. A upscale, tourism-driven downtown with excellent restaurants. Higher price point, and it comes with a real sense of place.
Historic downtown with genuine character, not a manufactured one. Popular with families and remote workers who want charm without sacrificing practicality.
Artsy and independent, with roots in apple orchards that turned into a quirky, creative community. A slower pace, and a strong sense of identity.
A newer, more planned-community feel. Family-oriented with a reputation for good schools, and generally more approachable pricing than the wine country towns.
Laid-back and nature-forward, with a long history as a welcoming community. Popular with weekenders, but plenty of people call it home year-round.
Before you pick a town
Microclimates change everything
Fog near the coast and the Russian River, sun further inland. Two towns twenty minutes apart can feel like different seasons on the same day.
You'll need a car
This is a rural county, not a walkable city. Daily life runs on driving, which shapes which town makes sense for your routine.
Wildfire awareness is real
Newcomers should understand seasonal fire risk and how different areas of the county have historically been affected. It's a normal part of living here, and worth understanding upfront.
Remote work has reshaped the county
More people are choosing Sonoma for space and quality of life while keeping city jobs. That shift has changed the character and pace of several towns in recent years.
